The Internet appeared relatively recently — in 1982. During this seemingly short period of time, we have become so accustomed to the World Wide Web that it is now almost impossible to imagine our life without it. You can do absolutely everything on the Internet: make purchases, watch movies, download information, useful applications, work and, of course, communicate with family and friends.
Therefore, it is quite natural that one of the first questions that interests foreign citizens planning a vacation or moving to a new country for permanent residence concerns the quality of the Internet, tariffs and options for connecting it.
In our article we will talk about the Internet in Turkey, since this resort country in a short time has become a place of attraction not only for vacationers, but also for foreign property buyers.
Content of the article:
In the Republic of Turkey there are several ways to use the Internet:
- go to an internet cafe;
- connect to free Wi-Fi in public places (for example, in a cafe, hotel room, etc.);
- buy a SIM card from one of the Turkish mobile operators;
- order a landline Internet connection service.
The first two options are suitable exclusively for tourists who come to Turkish resorts for a week or two. If you plan to actively use the World Wide Web, want to buy an apartment in Turkey, come for a long stay or for work, it is better and more profitable to use mobile or landline Internet. Let's look at these methods in more detail.
Mobile Internet in Turkey
Mobile Internet in Turkey is not cheap for foreigners. Especially if you purchase a starter package in a tourist area. The thing is that operators do not fix the cost of SIM cards for prepaid communication packages for non-residents. Therefore, the price tag is entirely determined by where you will make the purchase.
Average price of a SIM card — 300 TL (approx. 15 €). Foreign citizens have the opportunity to buy a SIM card immediately after arrival in airport stores or at official points of sale of cellular communications, in shopping centers, hotels, gas stations and even on the beaches. The best prices are in branded stores, and the highest prices are in airports and in areas favored by tourists.
To buy a SIM card, you need to have a passport with you.
Important information: connection and use Turkish cellular communications and the Internet on a smartphone brought from abroad is possible only for 120 days. At the end of this period, the connection will be blocked. To unlock, foreigners need to pay a tax of 2,732 TL (about 140 €).
The largest mobile Internet providers in Turkey — these are Turkcell, Vodafone and Turk Telekom (formerly Avea).

Turkcell
The mobile operator provides maximum coverage. Throughout the Republic of Turkey there is a 2G and 3G network (except for a few small areas), 4G — in megalopolises and large cities.
As a rule, foreign citizens first purchase the so-called Tourist Welcome Pack. The cost of connection today — 350 TL (18 €). The tariff plan includes 20 GB of Internet and 200 minutes for calls within the country. To purchase additional Internet traffic you will need to pay 1.8 TL for every 100 KB.
As soon as the Internet is used or after a month, you can switch to any suitable prepaid communication package.
Prices for mobile Internet in Turkey from Turkcell:
- 4 GB — 74 TL (3.8 €);
- 6 GB — 80 TL (4 €);
- 8 GB — 85 TL (4.3 €);
- 22 GB — 155 TL (8 €).
The company offers many different prepaid tariff packages.
Vodafone
Vodafone — another leading Internet provider in Turkey, whose 2G network operates throughout the state, except in the eastern highlands and desert. The 3G network is available in all cities and towns, 4G — in large settlements and resort regions.
When purchasing a SIM card from Vodafone, it is important to immediately select a package with the required amount of Internet traffic. Otherwise, you will be charged for using the network at standard rates.
Internet from a Turkish mobile operator costs 0.02 TL/10 KB.
Tourist Kolay Paketi — this is a starter package for foreigners at a price of 300–350 TL (16–18 €). Under the terms of the tariff, users have access to 20 GB, 750 minutes for calls within the country and 1,000 SMS. Only a one-time tariff connection for 28 days is possible. After using the traffic or upon expiration of the validity period, you need to select another package.
Mobile Internet tariffs from Vodafone:
- 5 GB — 74 TL (3.8 €);
- 10 GB — 84 TL (4.3 €);
- 15 GB — 94 TL (4.8 €).

Turk Telekom
Turk Telekom is considered the third largest subscriber in Turkey. It is distinguished by a high level of quality cellular communications and an acceptable cost of the Internet.
A foreigner can purchase a SIM card and choose a convenient tariff plan for it. The price of the starter package is about 250 TL (13 €).
Mobile Internet tariffs valid for 1 week:
- 5 GB — 45 TL (2.3 €);
- 10 GB — 55 TL (2.8 €);
- 15 GB — 70 TL (3.5 €).
If the package validity period is 1 month, the rates are as follows:
- 1 GB — 29 TL (1.5 €);
- 3 GB — 45 TL (2.3 €).
It should be noted that the concept of unlimited mobile Internet in Turkey, as such, does not exist.

Home Internet in Turkey
Fixed or wired Internet in Turkey — This is one of the first points that foreigners deal with after moving.
Despite the assurances of local Internet providers, the quality and speed of the Internet in Turkey is worse than we are used to receiving in our homeland. At the same time, you will have to pay much more for the services provided.
Several companies operate in the state. In particular, TTNET (a subsidiary of Türk Telekom) and SUPERONLINE (from the mobile operator Turkcell). In addition, Vodafone also provides Internet services, usually using the channels of the first two providers.
Despite high competition, tariffs and quality of services are practically no different.
The three less popular companies in the Turkish Internet communications market are TurkNet, Millenicom and Kablonet.
How much does home internet cost in Turkey? The amount depends on the selected service package. The price range varies from 95 TL to 240 TL. Sometimes companies run promotional programs and provide discounts to new customers.
When connecting to home Internet, it is important to consider the following conditions:
- A foreign citizen must have a valid residence permit.
- Before choosing a provider, make sure your apartment complex is connected to a fiber optic line. If fiber optic is installed, it is better to use it to get the best quality and speed of the Internet connection (up to 25 MB/sec). If not, then it remains possible to connect via ADSL or VDSL modem technologies. In this case, the Internet speed will not exceed 8 MB/sec.
- All Turkish Internet companies enter into service agreements for a period of 1–2 years. If the client decides to terminate the contract early, he will be fined. Before signing the contract, carefully study all the terms of cooperation.
- Untimely payment of the monthly package may result in the accrual of penalties.
- Unlimited traffic to the Turkish Internet — the concept is conditional. Once 50 GB is used, the speed will gradually decrease until the account is recharged.
- When moving to a new place of residence, you need to inform your provider about this. If your new home is covered by the company's network, you will be able to reconnect.
Which version of the Internet — mobile or landline — is right for you, depends on the length of stay in the Republic of Turkey, goals and objectives.
