Every year, millions of foreigners come to the Republic of Turkey for vacation or for the purpose of relocation to a permanent place of residence. Some tourists decide to travel around the country using their own or rented vehicle. In this regard, questions about how to park correctly in Turkey remain invariably relevant among foreign citizens.
Car parking areas are available in all cities of the eastern state. In addition, the law does not provide for any time restrictions for drivers who want to leave their car. However, parking rules in Turkey have their own characteristics, which we recommend studying in advance. This is exactly what we will talk about in our latest review.

What are the features of parking in Turkey
According to reviews from foreigners, the roads in Turkey, especially in the southwest of the country, in megacities and resorts, are of excellent quality. Highways of national importance are not at all inferior to highways in leading European countries.
Turkish drivers often violate traffic rules. Therefore, citizens who come from abroad do not immediately get used to the local driving culture. Foreign motorists in this resort republic should be extremely careful and remain calm on the roads.
As for parking, we will highlight several key points:
- According to the traffic rules, a vehicle is allowed to be left on the right side of the road if there is no sign prohibiting parking.
- Mainly paid parking in Turkey. Free parking in big cities can only be found in specially designated areas in front of shopping and entertainment centers. In addition, there are parking areas near parks and tourist places.
- Public service employees work in paid parking lots. You simply leave your car, and after returning to the car, a parking attendant in a bright vest (yellow or orange) will approach you with a terminal. The task of Turkish parking attendants, as in other countries, is to record the time when you left the car in a paid parking lot and receive payment according to the tariff.
- How to pay for parking in Turkey? Choose one of the methods, depending on the situation:
- As soon as you return to the car, the parking attendant will give you a cash receipt for payment. You can pay on the spot. Typically, the price tag is about 15 Turkish lira per hour. If the parking time is no more than 15 minutes, then you do not need to pay.
- If you decide to park in an underground or large surface parking lot near tourist spots, pedestrian streets, walking areas, attractions, upon entry the machine will give you a card with date and time of arrival. When leaving the parking space, you will need to use the machine again, which will calculate the cost of parking. Having paid for parking services through the operator, you will be issued a new card with which you can leave the underground parking through the barrier. Some closed parking lots require advance payment.

The described parking systems in the Republic of Turkey have been operating for a long time and successfully. It is important to know that all information about the vehicle is recorded in the electronic system. Therefore, you need to pay for parking your car in paid parking lots, since next time you will certainly be reminded of the debt.
If a car sits for a long time and no one picks it up, in some cases workers simply call a tow truck and take it to a special parking lot. Once the driver is located, he will have to pay money to pick up the car.
Local citizens often use special parking passes. Essentially, this is a card on which a certain amount is deposited monthly. During this period, the driver can park his car for free in any paid parking lot in the city. The advantages are obvious: saving money and time.
The fine for parking in Turkeydepends on the violation: p>
- for leaving a car in the wrong place (for example, under a “no parking” sign) — 436 TL (about 20 €);
- in case of parking a car in an area intended for cars of people with disabilities — 873 TL (about 40 €).

Parking situation in big cities of Turkey
Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir — one of the largest cities in Turkey with high population density. Therefore, the priority task of municipalities is to increase the quantity and quality of parking.
What options are available to motorists?
Option No. 1.The car can be parked in the courtyards of residential areas — on the side of the road or in “pockets”. Parking in such places is not prohibited, the main thing is — find a free place. Exceptions include parking spaces near business centers, hotels, and administrative buildings. This is a private, secure area, and as soon as you park, a security guard will approach you to clarify the purpose of the visit and ask you to remove the car.
Option No. 2. In Turkish metropolitan areas and, in particular, in Istanbul, there are so-called municipal parking lots. These parking lots were built on the initiative of the city mayor's office. They are located, as a rule, in less active and remote areas from the center. The driver can leave his car in such a parking lot and then travel by metro, minibus, trolleybus or taxi. This concept has been proving its effectiveness for several years.
Parking tariffs are low — from 10–15 TL. The longer the parking time, the lower the cost.
Option No. 3. Private parking lots, which are now available in different areas of Istanbul, Ankara, Antalya and other big cities. There are enough free parking spaces, but the cost is naturally higher than in regular municipal parking lots. In the elite tourist areas of Istanbul, the price tag can reach 20 TL per hour (150–200 TL per day).
As a rule, average city residents try not to use private parking lots and leave their cars there only in rare cases, for example, when returning late in the evening, since at that time it is already It's very difficult to find another option. In addition, some wealthy tourists choose private parking lots so as not to worry about the safety of their expensive cars.
As for the resort regions of Turkey, the parking situation here is much simpler. In the popular resorts of Alanya and Antalya there are no difficulties with parking spaces. In resort towns there are both open municipal and private, as well as underground parking lots under shopping centers and near central squares. Tourists who come to the sea by car choose hotels with their own parking lots. And when purchasing liquid apartments in a modern residential complex in Turkey, foreign investors receive, in addition to the internal diverse infrastructure, their own guarded parking lot.
