Tax number in Turkey: what is it
Vergi Numerasi, or Turkish tax payer number, is, in fact, an analogue of the identification code that citizens of the former CIS countries receive. The issuance of the document is regulated by Article No. 1 of Law No. 213 of the Tax Procedure Code of the Republic of Turkey.
TIN consists of a unique combination of ten digits and is automatically assigned to every citizen of the Republic of Turkey upon birth. Individuals receive a TIN once. The code does not change throughout life, including when changing place of residence, surname, marriage registration and in other cases. A tax number is also required for legal entities that were registered in Turkey or conduct commercial activities in the country.
In addition to local citizens, all foreigners who plan to stay in a resort country longer than provided for by the terms of the visa or visa-free regime are required to acquire a TIN. And also in cases where foreign citizens intend to work in Turkey, engage in commercial activities, use the services of local banks and medical clinics.
It is important to know: obtaining a tax number by a foreigner is not a basis for paying taxes. Taxation becomes the responsibility of a foreign citizen only if a profit is received in the territory of the state. For example, from leasing or resale of real estate.
Why do you need a TIN in Turkey
You will need a Turkish Individual Taxpayer Number for various official procedures:
- in order to open an account in Turkey ;
- purchase apartments and issue documents certifying property rights (TAPU) for them;
- to apply for Turkish citizenship when purchasing real estate or on any other basis;
- when applying for a legal residence permit (ikamet card);
- to register a new utility and energy user;
- when concluding agreements for Internet connection;
for paying annual property taxes and other government fees; - when taking driving courses and obtaining a driver’s license;
when purchasing a vehicle; - when applying for an official job or opening your own business;
- to submit documents for admission to an educational institution;
- when certifying documents at a notary office;
- for carrying out any financial transactions or concluding transactions and in other cases.

Useful recommendations:
- To avoid queues and waiting for an appointment with a tax inspector, it is better to issue a TIN remotely, through the official website.
- Remember, if you enter your first and last name in small letters, the system will generate an error and you will have to go through the entire procedure again. You need to enter personal data exactly as written in your passport.
- If you have checked that the information has been entered correctly, but the system continues to give an error after filling it out, you need to contact the tax office in person.
- The Turkish government regularly reviews the legislation and the procedure for processing important documents by foreign citizens in Turkey. Therefore, be careful and before registering a tax number, check the latest information on the official portals of the department.
